Reinhard Bütikofer, Member of the European Parliament for the Greens/EFA group, comments on the upcoming publication on European Economic Security:
“The EU Commission has rightly opted for a strategy of moderate ambition when it comes to economic security. The Commission’s proposal provides a good basis for lively debate in the upcoming European election campaign. It is no secret that relevant parts of European business and some national governments have not yet paid much more than lip service to the need to minimize risks to our economic security. The European Commission cannot overcome this on its own. Precisely because it knows how little time we have to get our act together in this area, it had to avoid making the better the enemy of the good. However, the proposals that are now on the table are the bare minimum of what is needed. Incidentally, I believe that investment screening will also be necessary for outbound investments.”
