With the ascendance of Xi Jinping as General Secretary of the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) and State President, the CCP’s United Front Work Department has increased activities outside of the People’s Republic of China to control and if necessary repress Chinese diaspora groups and individuals. Over the last few month this topic has received bigger prominence with the publication of several critical reports, such as 110 OVERSEAS Chinese Transnational Policing Gone Wild and China’s Diaspora Policy under Xi Jinping.
In this webinar, we seek to better understand China’s policing of overseas communities by discussing this issue with our distinguished speakers Laura Harth (campaigner at Safeguard Defenders and IPAC), Dr. Carsten Schäfer (researcher at the Institute of East Asian Studies, University of Cologne) and Simon Cheng (founder and chairperson of Hongkongers in Britain).
