Commenting on the EU Summit´s stance on Syria, the Co-Chair of the European Green Party Reinhard Bütikofer said:
As justified as it is to demand an immediate ceasefire in the Syrian conflict and in particular in the battle over Aleppo, we know it will not happen, because the cynicism of Assad´s regime and his Russian and Iranian allies vis-a-vis the immeasurable suffering of the civilian population is unsurmountable.
As necessary as it is to analyse the mistakes committed by the Western powers, in particular the US and the EU member countries in this conflict, we know it will not save a single live retroactively.
As important as it is to draw conclusions from this conflict for EU efforts to become a more credible actor in helping to project security in its neighbourhood, we know this will come late for all the victims of this civil war.
What we still could do: Open our borders for the very people that are right now fleeing from Aleppo.
But this the European Council did not even discuss. Long live our common values.
